Changes

With changes in our life we're having to make some changes in our schooling plans. Over the last few months I've been experiencing joint pain that is progressively getting worse, and it was discovered that I have some autoimmune issues going one. Moreover, we have absolutely impeccable timing and now we are expecting our fifth child. Due to this I had to stop taking my ADHD medication, and due to the autoimmune issues I'm high risk and will probably require extra monitoring. We'll have to see how that works out, I guess. In any case, staying on top of school as well as managing the kids and doing housework has gotten much more difficult than it had been. We're going to try changing and simplifying our curriculum so that the kids can work more independently. Right now I'm looking for workbook options for phonics, spelling and general language arts/grammar for the boys, as what we're using currently is quite teacher intensive. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be glad to take them!

  1. I've heard really good things about Switched On Schoolhouse.

  2. I hopped over here from the WTM forums. I am just coming out the other side from a 3 month long recovery from Cipro side-effects, and possibly an auto-immune response to that, as well. I just feel for you. Give yourself permission to let go of all the schooling you need to, in order to just focus on your own health needs, vitamins, rest, and de-stressing! Your kids will not turn into cavemen! Don't listen to naysayers. I had relatives calling me up and insisting that I put my kids in daycare and school. Not helpful in the least to add that to an already stressful situation! Take it as easy as you can. Praying and sending good thoughts your way!

  3. Just saw this--hugs. How do you feel about educational media? There are some great LeapFrog and other games out there that could occupy various kids at various times while teaching them some of the basics.

  4. Thanks for for support. :) I'm not opposed to leap frog type things, although right now I have workbooks for the boys that are working. The LeapFrog things may be a good idea for next year, especially for Rosie. Hmmm.

  5. I got M one for Christmas and he has been very interested when he's seen them elsewhere. I also bought the camera attachment ($20) so he can experiment with making videos and editing pictures, since he loves taking pictures and video anyway. It's geared for 4 - 7 year olds so perfect for him.

They have younger age stuff too, though, and I'm always amazed at how much my kids learn just messing with it for a bit.
