How. . .odd

Brownback has endorsed McCain. I think that odd may be the only way to describe this. Brownback was an ultra conservative pro-life right wing candidate, though he didn't always toe the party line and wasn't above criticizing the Republican leadership, and here he is endorsing a definite moderate who has a checkered past with regard to pro-life issues, among other Republican pet issues. I'm quite surprised.

  1. I think it may be a calculated move to bolster his standing among moderates. He will eventually have to run for re-election, and if the Republicans are to gain any ground over the next few years, it's going to be the moderate wing of the party that does it, because the overall electorate seems to be moving more to the left after 8 years of supposedly conservative Republicans not getting anything done.

If he endorsed Huckabee, then he's betting on another "compassionate conservative" type, and lots of Republicans feel like they went down that road with Bush the last eight years and got burned, when he turned out to be not particularly compassionate, and exceedingly un-conservative.

Of course, he may also just be kissing up to McCain for a VP nomination.

Please keep in mind that this is little more than the ramblings of a fat weatherman who watches politics strictly for entertainment value.

  2. One comment I would make is that Brownback knows McCain, having been in the Senate with him. So to me that speaks for a lot.
